What is Personal Freedom?

Today’s episode of Coach Ryan’s Corner is coming out on July 6th. For my American readers, this means the day after Independence Day.

As you’re waking up out of your hot dog-induced comas, I’d like to talk about little about Freedom. And not the Freedom in the “’Merica” context. But Personal Freedom.

What is Personal Freedom?

When was the last time you did something bold? Boldness in service of moving your life forward in a powerful way?

I made a choice a couple days ago. This is a choice that will move my life forward powerfully. But it’s a choice that really scares me.

My first instinct when I get into situations like this is to look for permission to make this choice. Retroactive permission.

I made the choice and immediately asked two people in my life if it was okay to make this choice. If I made the right choice.

And it became apparent this is a pattern for me. This is a path that I take on a regular basis. This path takes away my power and puts it back in the hands of those from whom I seek validation.

See where I’m going with this?

I’m a big boy. I’m 40 years old. I’m intelligent and capable of making my own choices. And the fact that I let my past dictate how I make my choices is something that I’m not incredibly proud of.

The moral of this story is this: personal freedom is the idea that your past has no bearing on your now. As long as you’re not harming yourself, others, or are outside the law somehow, you can choose what you want to choose without having to get permission from anyone.

Freedom from the constraints of your past – that’s Personal Freedom!
